What about that electric mountain bike?
one etek, splurge on lithiums, no tranny.
could you keep the weight down to say 120lbs?
If it was geared pretty low, you might be able to have a lot of fun with the 
manueverability.
It would be a bit like a trials bike.

'course it depends on what kind of dirt riding you like.

No I would never intentionally add weight to a swingarm. I'd get the countershaft sprocket location as close to the pivot as possible, and leave it at that.
