I've used 4 gauge on the 3 bikes I've done. With a 450A 72V system and running it wide open on a full charge I could feel a slight heating on the motor cable, not battery cables. I think 4 ga is sufficient for street use of an Alltrax sized controller. No harm in going larger, 4 ga is safe i.e. no risk of melting insulation.
