Not entirely true, if you know and understand what you are doing and what you 
are trying to achieve!...and  preferably in a readonly/snapshot query mode.
 
Not my recommendation though.. I had a scenario where i had to bypass complete 
Object model and write SQL Query to achieve the result..

No...do not connect directly to the sharepoint database...use the Object Model 
or Web Service...SharePoint databases are not like regular databases...not to 
mention they can be touchy.

I should probably add that I have got this far but am unable to determine what 
database or server address I should be suing.

 

Is there a default? I didn't set this site up you see so I'm a little lost.
