Hi Jason,

I would say the changeset is something worth investigating, the version field
limit is a problem that we need to look into if we are to go down that path.
We can use some other field like AssemblyDescription. For now I am just
looking for the solution that will require the least change and I think I'm
going to just override the labelling behaviour in my project file to do it
manually instead of letting TFS do it for me.

Eddie

Jason,

One issue with this is that each segment in the version field is limited to
16-bits (i.e. 65536) so if your changeset number exceeds this then your build
will fail. When I first encountered this I raised it as a bug on Connect but it
is By Design:

Hi Eddie,

I chose a different approach for tracking an old deployed build back to its
source version. I read about the idea from Jeremy Miller and Richard Banks and
it involves using the TFS changeset number as part of the assembly version
number.

I posted a blog about it last week with some links to how-to articles:

Maybe this will help if labels don't work out for you.

Hi Buck,

I was troubleshooting a problem in a test VM using a relatively old build.
Just wanted to get back to the source to check out something but didn't realise
I can't go off the label anymore because TFS actually removes it.

I guess now I've been bitten, I will remember to manually create labels instead
of relying on TFS.

That's correct. There are no options for the retention policy to control
whether the label gets deleted. I'm curious to know why you'd want to keep the
old labels.

Hi,

Team build labels everything in source after a successful build with the build
number, but it also seems to remove old label after a successful build if we
configure the retention policy? Is that correct? Can we keep all label
TeamBuild created regardless of the settings in retention policy?

Eddie
