No, I did not do The Giver with 6th grade. My 6th Honors did Number the
Stars by Lois Lowry. She is remarkable. I love her as an author.( I have not
read her new book Gossamer yet). Number the Stars could easily be 7th or 8th
with the subject matter but I had many students come to me as 6th graders
who had read it as 4th graders!!

Tomorrow, a group of Holocaust survivors are coming to our school to talk
with our 7th Honors and 8th grade Honors LA classes. This is a fine
extension for Number the Stars. My 6th graders loved the book & Lois Lowry.
SO many authors write down to their age group or do not make books
memorable. She is a winner.

I also loved Among the Hidden (first in a series) for 7th grade. The author
has many books out with various topics that appeal to both boys and girls. I
had all classes in the computer lab doing author website searches for both
Lowry & Haddix Peterson and they loved learning about these authors. Neat
women. I love hooking them on a series.

Barnes and Noble called me locally to say what was going on....so many
coming to request their books! Yes, that is what it is all about. I do read
aloud with drama. And the author's words and plot hook them. Such a
combiniation!

I love reading and I learn so much from my wonderful students and other
exceptional teachers like all of you!
