And no Bev, I don't see Writing Centers thriving at the middle school level although when I taught grades 2/3 we were big proponents. Now, with NCLB, we are being curtailed by what we can do because of time. There are so many "have toos" lately dictated by the district that there are not enough hours in the day.

Subject: [LIT] Writing Centers in Middle School? The Nov/Dec issue of "The Clearing House: A Journal of Educational Strategies, Issues, and Ideas" is a special issue focused on "The Writing Center and Beyond." I found the articles interesting discussions of the writing center at high schools and colleges. As one of the articles indicated, implementing a writing center is being proactive in the education crisis. I'm wondering if there is a middle school somewhere that has opened a writing center? I'm thinking of proposing that to my principal as a way to strengthen "writing across the curriculum," something he is pushing the faculty to institute. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a clear vision of what "writing across the curriculum" would entail, so he is pushing instead of leading, but that's another story.. To repeat my query, do you know of a middle school that has a writing center? How is it used and how is it staffed?
