Hi Jan,

Quote sandwiches:) It is a structured way for students to provide written
analysis. For example, a student develops a focus/thesis either from a
prompt or they independently develop one. The focus/thesis is structured
around character analysis (traits of the character), character change,
author's craft, or theme/lesson learned. Student develops context to help
their audience understand their focus/thesis. Then they select and write a
quote that supports their focus. Then they analyze the "author's words,"
which ultimately proves their focus/thesis.

Top bun: Focus/thesis and context (student words)
Middle of sandwich: Quote (author's words)
Bottom bun: Analysis of quote (students words)

Instruction in the quote sandwich accomplishes two goals. It helps students
to strategically analyze text. It helps students write better.

Our state reports the results of teaching year...Our students made good
gains in reading - 73% to 81%; Our writing scores went from 58% to 79%.
Now, our entire faculty (including math teachers) committed to using the
"quote sandwich" approach to written response. So, the math teachers
developed one for written communication in problem solving, social studies
and science teachers used the quote sandwich approach for the body
paragraphs of research reports, and English teachers used the approach for
analysis of fictional texts.

We just went through a SALT (Systematic Assessment of Learning and
Teaching), interestingly enough a teacher I know from another district
mentioned that she had introduced this to her team...and one of the SALT
team members was most interested, as she had seen it at our school.

If anyone is interested in seeing some samples of student work, I'd be happy
to share.

Mary Lou
