Lori, My understanding is that the NYC Dept. of Education has mandated Balanced Literacy as the reading/writing program. I don't remember all the specifics, but I know there is variation among schools. (There are over 1,200 public schools in New York City). Some schools use the America's Choice Ramp-Up program. My school uses Reading and Writing Workshop (Teachers' College R + W Project) pretty much exclusively. Hope that helps. -Heather Gottlieb IS 89
