A much better predictor of reading ability is the SRI (Scholastic Reading Inventory), which is also a computerized system. The questions on this test, however, are all inferential, even at the BR (beginning reading) levels, so students must actually be able to make connections between text, self and world to score well. The only downfall with this test is that students tend to dip in their lexiles if the test is given more than twice during the school year. But if the test is used consistently over several years, you will notice an increase in reading ability from one year to the next. In that way it is a better indicator than the STAR (Accelerated Reader), because the questions are all mid to higher level questions. DeAnn Kaduce

Our Middle School bought into AR once upon a principal and don't use the AR testing but have retained the testing. I have no personal experience, but the MS principal and staff do not feel it is effective in predicting reading issues. It is also computerized, gives reading levels.
