i have the students fold their papers into 4 colums.  
first: word
second: meaning from context
third: draw a picture of the word's meaning
fourth: use the word in a sentence
 
you can add more columns if you want to add anything. if the student is  
actively thinking during this process, the student usually learns the word well 
 
enough to 'own it'.  hope this helps.
