Hello, I am in the process of reading Nancy Akhaven's new book: Accelerated Vocabulary Instruction: Strategies for Closing the Achievement Gap for All Students<http://www.amazon.com/Accelerated-Vocabulary-Instruction-Strategies-Achievement/dp/0439930375/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-3262170-9225401?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1182947933&sr=8-1>. So far, I am very impressed. I can't wait to try it. It's set up around mini lessons and something she calls the "FABULOUS 15" 15 minutes of vocabulary teaching.
She wrote another one that I love as well. How to Align Literacy Instruction, Assessment, and Standards: And Achieve Results You Never Dreamed Possible<http://www.amazon.com/Align-Literacy-Instruction-Assessment-Standards/dp/0325006628/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/103-3262170-9225401?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1182947933&sr=8-2>about how to set up your workshop classroom to include both the standards that you have to teach and the skills you need to teach. I saw her at the CATE meeting last year. She worked a school down the street from me at the time. SHe knows her stuff. Luckily, our district just hired her for an administrive position downtown, but I don't exactly know for what. I hope she will be able to touch the classroom directly. -- Kim ------- Kimberlee Hannan Department Chair Sequoia Middle School 4050 E.
