I was given an editor's proof edition of a book that comes out next
week.
I read it aloud to my middle school students and they LOVED it. In addition,
I have arranged for the author to come in and speak to them in May. When I
told my students she is coming, they actually cheered.
The book is called "The Compound" by Stephanie Stuve-Bodeen (it says
S.A.
Boodeen on the cover). She has written several picture books, but this is
her first YA book.
Here is an exert that is on the cover of my copy:
My world ended with a bang the minute we entered the Compound and that
silver door closed behind us.
The sound was brutal.
Final.
An echoing, resounding boom that slashed my nine-year-old heart in two.
My
fists beat on the door. I bawled. The screaming left me hoarse and my feet
hurt.
Through my tears, the bear and elk on my father's shirt swam together.
Beneath the chamois, Dad's chest heaved. The previous forty minutes had
left us out of breath. Finally my gaze focused and went beyond him,
searching. I gulped down a painful sob.
Had everyone made it?
The other teaser on the cover says the following:
Eli never thought he would have to live in the Compound. But the world
they knew is gone.
Eli's father built the Compound to keep them safe. Now, they can't get
out.
He won't let them.
Hi!
I think it's getting to be time to think about ideas for summer reading
books for this listserve. For new members (and welcome to you!), the past
few summers, we've voted on one or two books to read and discuss together
on a side list. These might be professional books (e.g. "Naked Reading"
where we lucked out and got Teri Lesesne to join us) or young adolescent
books (e.g. "Twilight" which we read last summer).
What ideas do you have for this year?!
Take care,
Bill Ivey
