"The Giver" is a great read for 8th graders but we found that it works
better as a school year reading than a summer reading book because many
of our students needed some support/discussion/refection as they read.
Some of my favorite class discussions and reading response projects were
related to this book. Sadly, we took it out of our curriculum because
younger grades were reading itI
I am very interested in the book suggestions that have come out of this
discussion.
To Annie, who is going from 6th grade to 8th grade, my suggestion, other
than books which others have recommended and I will add a few below, is
BE PREPARED - it's a whole different country!
A book that my 8th graders have been loving for several years now is a
collection of stories from beloved YA authors edited by James Howe,
called "13: Thirteen stories that capture the agony and ecstasy of being
thirteen." Lots of my boys, who are often hard to draw into reading,
love Darren Shan's books. Scott Westerfeld's "Uglies" series has also
been very popular.

Lowis Lowry's "Giver" is a great read for 8th grade. It is the only book
I use as a grade level lit group in my multi-age class. Yes, younger
kids read it and like it but the 8th graders are more likely to "get"
it!
Zusak's "The Book Thief" for you more sophisticated readers.
Cynthia Lord's "Rules"
