I am in my second year of teaching Read 180. In my district kids usually begin in sixth grade. Our district supports reading at student grade levels in all classes using DRA results as a guide. Up till fifth grade students are expected to be taught in guided reading groups. Of course, that doesn't always happen for a variety of reasons.
I teach READ 180 to 7th/8th graders. They are assessed to gain a level of instruction. There are 3 components to the program. 1. Computer Instruction based on assessed Lexile score. 2. Small group instruction. 3. Independent Reading - book of choice from books at lexile range. The program is good for those kids who take advantage of it. As with any program, it is only as good as the teacher who teaches it. Motivation is key! My question for you, as a Read 180 teacher is, when did students receive reading instruction at their grade level? -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Sunday, February 15, 2009 6:24 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [LIT] To Tena via Literacy Workshop In a message dated 2/15/09 9:57:21 AM, [email protected] writes: > In the past 5 years I have gone from Staff Developer, to LA 7th and 8th > grade, Remedial Reading, Social Development/Remedial Reading, Read 180 > Teacher. > ----------- I also teach remedial reading att his age level and I would be very interested in hearing what you did with students in this class.
