Hi Jana,

We use the Gates-McGinitie Reading Test (GMRT) as a school wide screen to
provide benchmarks at the beginning and end of the school year (as well as the
Morrison-McCall Spelling Test). It has been very helpful to determine which
kids need extra support and need further assessment (an IRI - independent
reading inventory). With 600 students in the school, it is a lot of data, but
our whole school feels better informed to what the needs of our kids are so we
can work together to provide the best learning environment. It also gives us
data to share with the high schools are kids are feeding to.

I researched other group administered tests before deciding on using the GMRT
as our main screening tool. As a screening tool, it does the trick, but as I
mentioned earlier, other diagnostic tools are needed to get more detailed info
about each student.

Tracey
