Another important choice to make early in the release cycle is whether

I'm in favor of switching to gdal 2.

I am in favor of switching to GDAL 2.x as long as all downstream projects in
the disk have a stable release supporting it.
At this moment this is not the case.

Perhaps we should compile a list of which packages are not yet
supporting GDAL 2.x to ease discussion?
Packages relying only on the C API don't need a change.

One of the reasons I'm a bit pushy for gdal 2 is that I's love to have
Xerial released with gdal 2, otherwise we will be stuck with the "old"
version in the LTS release. If I'm not mistaking, fedora is also
already using GDAL 2.

Kind Regards,

Hi Johan,

As far as I know, OTB is preparing a 5.2 release to support GDAL 2.x and ZOO-Project is preparing for a 1.6.0 release too.

Looking at Xenial Launchpad page for GDAL it seems it already pulled 1.11.2 in the distribution:

Best,
Angelos
