He's not suggesting using the field wire as the output, but to use the 
normal output terminal.  The field wire will be used with the rheostat 
to act like a manually controlled regulator.

 It's been years since  I worked with alternators but IIRC the diodes in 
those days were rated at a fairly low voltage, 36 V comes to mind.   I 
assume they are much higher today since technology has advanced 
considerably since then.
