I would suggest that it might be an opening into the oil gallery for a 
sending unit.  Some engines have two, one for the oil *gauge* and one 
for the alarm.  However you would probably have more than a slight leak 
if that were the case, unless the alarm sending unit broke off and left 
something in the hole.
