Peter,
Most parts of Europe broadcast in Pal/Secam as one system except UK that you
tune in and have either picture or sound in a Pal/Scam tv unit.
All DVD players can read region 1 or region 2 but if you. I think if you play
DVD's of a certain region for long period they lock to one region. At least on
a computer.
The cheap dvd players that I have used so far can read both with no problem.
I have DVD's from the old country that play on my north American dvd player.

  Since my boat is in Spain, or, therabouts, the availability of PAL was my
question, except for brief visits to Corsica where SECAM would be the system.

  But since you bring it up, what would the digital version of SECAM and PAL be
called?

  Also .. (and obviously i know nothing about this stuff) I have always seen
the PAL, SECAM, NTSC as a description on VHS tapes. I see PAL and region 2
marked on the DVD I have in my hand and I do understand that region 2 is the
European region of a DVD. (I thought this was done to release DVDs in a
controled manner, one region after the other.

  But why have a region 2 restriction on a DVD if the region 1 version could
not be played on a DVD player that was a PAL system because it was made to send
a signal to a PAL TV? Wouldn't the NTSC system of an American DVD prevent it
from being viewed on a PAL TV? Or is the region designation just another way of
saying PAL, SECAM, NTSC?

  Peter

    NTSC is USA analog, PAL is Europe analog, I believe that SECAM is French
analog, what you would find in French Caribbean. Why is there no mention of
ATSC, USA Digital? Also QAM, USA digital cable stations?

      I don't know Peter,
      The DVD reader it has the choices but I do not know for the TV itself.
      The manual says "broadcast system= ntsc/ pal but have no way to confirm
that.
      Now that I read it better it says
      composite video input ==> ntsc/pal/secam
      S-video input ==> ntsc/pal/secam
      antenna (RF) ==>ntsc/pal

        Your post seems to suggest the new tv functions on 240V Any idea if it
will work in Europe (PAL) instead of the North American (SECAM)?
