I installed a variable pitch sheave on the PTO to run the water pump. If
yours has the water pump and alternator on seperate belts, then the
problem, not emough belt wrap, is solved.
I looked up the power handling ability of a 3L belt. It is OK if there is
sufficient belt wrap, but a no-go if the wrap is diminished to the extent
it was when the single belt was making a triangular circuit driving the
water pump too.
The reason for the Yanmar fix is that the water pump pulley can be reversed
and will align perfectly with a sheave bolted to the PTO, Screw in the
variable pitch pulley to get the right tension. It does not take much power
to drive the pump, so just taking out the slack does the job. Then you can
use a single dedicated belt to drive the alternator.
If you were shredding belts you would notice. Believe me, black dust is
hard to miss.

What is your solution for the Yanmar 2GM's? MIne run the water pump on a
separate belt. I haven't noticed any belt dust, but that doesn't mean
there isn't any down there.

Are you using a single 3/8" (3L) belt? One that also drives the fresh
water pump? If so that is the problem. Not enough belt wrap. If you are
running a Yanmar 2 or 3 gm series engine I have a solution that worked for me.

I've got a newer Balmar 100 amp alternator bolted onto a Volvo MD2030 and
am getting a lot of rubber dust off the balmar pulley, which is getting
sucked into the alternator.
Changed sheeves, belts match sheeves, spoke to both Balmar and Volvo, no
help there.
Tried belt dressing, have backed off amp output down to 75 amps, still
getting dust.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Rit
