I have a Yanmar 2GM and had one engine making dust and eating belts with the stock alternator. Finally figured out the sheaves had rust on them. Replaced one and sanded the others - problem solved. Balmar alternators would probably benefit with 2 belts. On my old boat I installed a Balmar 100amp on a Volvo 2003 with single pulley. It shortened the life of my fw pump and also ate belts. Best belt I found was a Gates cog belt. I also installed the cutoff switch as I couldn't get off the mooring once the alternator kicked in. It was fine once underway and I closed the switch.
