I have found that most of the time this is true, however, many older
winches the model number does not relate to the mechanical advantage. -
ALSO as with horse power in cars - the number can be manipulated.
Theoretical mechanical advantage is different from the actual output. The
efficiency of the winch is an important factor.
Practical Sailor (around 1989) tested many different brands and
found considerable differences in mechanical efficiency. At that time I
bought the most efficient winches listed in their survey, Andersons. I
never regretted the decision.

Winch nomenclature has got me confused! I understand that the numbers
relate to mechanical advantage. For example, a Lewmar 30 has a 30:1
mechanical advantage. Is this standard from brand to brand. Does a
Barient 27 give a 27:1 mechanical advantage? Is a Barlow 30 equivalent to
a Lewmar 30?
Thanks
