Regardless, the bigger the number the stronger the winch, and if it is two
speed the
slow speed supposed to be close to the number on the winch.

Peter,
Winches like wenches are not always what they may appear on the surface. :-)
The numbers should indicate the mechanical advantage and often do, but I
understand that there is no guarantee that the number is accurate. The
marketing department of some of the manufacturers apparently has some influence
in the number selection.

Subject: [Liveaboard] Winches
Winch nomenclature has got me confused! I understand that the numbers
relate to mechanical advantage. For example, a Lewmar 30 has a 30:1 mechanical
advantage. Is this standard from brand to brand. Does a Barient 27 give a
27:1 mechanical advantage? Is a Barlow 30 equivalent to a Lewmar 30?
Thanks
Peter
