Peter,

Winches like wenches are not always what they may appear on the surface.
:-) The numbers should indicate the mechanical advantage and often do, but
I understand that there is no guarantee that the number is accurate. The
marketing department of some of the manufacturers apparently has some
influence in the number selection.

  Subject: [Liveaboard] Winches

Winch nomenclature has got me confused! I understand that the numbers
relate to mechanical advantage. For example, a Lewmar 30 has a 30:1
mechanical advantage. Is this standard from brand to brand. Does a Barient
27 give a 27:1 mechanical advantage? Is a Barlow 30 equivalent to a Lewmar
30?

  Thanks
  Peter
