One of the guys on the CYOA (Columbia Yacht Owners Association) forum is out there doing it now and has been for several years. He removed the engine from his Columbia 36 and replaced it with batteries and an electric motor. He has cruised in that boat, under electric power and sail, from Puget Sound down to Mexico and back. Then he shipped the boat to the Chesapeake Bay and cruised there for a year. He then shipped it back to the PNW and is now cruising the San Juan's.
The set up is not for extended motoring, just to get in and out of harbor and out of tight spots. He carries a small (EU2000) Honda generator to recharge the batteries when there isn't enough sun to do it through the solar panels. He is a Naval Architect (big ships) and is very happy with the installation.
