Joseph, there are a number of things to look at and it may be a process of
elimination. Let's start with the easy stuff first. Cooling system. Check the
strainer and intake, hose, etc, for clogs. Check the fresh water level. Check
the amount of sea water discharge. You could have clogs, low fresh water,
defective sea water pump impeller. Check the temperature with another source to

be sure the engine is running hot, not a defective gauge. Laser, infrared
thermometers are good for this. You may need to disassemble the heat exchanger
and clean it out.

Inspect the prop to be sure it and the bottom of the boat are clean. The
growth on the bottom and prop can cause poor performance and can cause
overheating if the water is warm. Generally, the drag from a dirty bottom will
cause
black smoke.

White smoke can come from old or dirty fuel. Check filters and be sure you
are getting proper fuel flow to the engine and that the cetane is okay. Maybe
add a cetane booster.

That's the easy stuff. The engine stuff you probably need to get someone
else to check. You need to check the injector timing and performance. You can
pull the injectors and take them to a diesel shop to have checked. You need to
check the timing on the injector pump and compression on the cylinders. Also
look for a blown head gasket or crack where you might be getting water into a
cylinder. Be sure to check the crankcase oil for any water intrusion. It will
 get foamy.

If you haven't found the problem after all of this, get a good mechanic. Re
member how you have run the boat, you ran aground and could have damaged
something or clogged something with grass or sand or mud. Just check each
system
for proper operation.

Let us know what you find. Good luck
