I assume cracking could occur in freezing climates or is it also an age thing. When a unit is pickled in an area prone to freezing will it freeze? What is cold weather winterizing procedure? Where can one purchase pickling supplies other than the $240 cruising kit?

I have no experience with freezing climates (and don't want to have any!). The manual does go into it. It mentions to run it until no more water comes out of the reject after pickling if a chance of freezing. It then goes on to say the membrane must be slowly and completely thawed before using. So I assume freezing won't hurt it, but the high pressure with ice present would probably damage it.

The places that sell watermakers can supply the biocide and cleaning chemicals. They're expensive in the small containers, but cheap if bought in bulk. I seem to recall that a 1 gal pail (might even have been 5 gal) was around $90, but a 100 gram bottle from West Marine is about $25. Please don't hold me to these figures, but they should be ballpark. On the previous boat, a 100 gram bottle lasted almost 2 years. It takes 2 teaspoons per pickle.
