I have about 500 pieces of Standard commercial satellite gear. Dealing with them has been great. Lee haefele ----- Original Message ----- From: Steve Weinstein To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, June 22, 2009 8:20 AM Subject: Re: [Liveaboard] Test - Anyone There?
I'm surprised you had issues with Standard Horizon, 'bella. My experience has been that they have the best customer service in the business. There's a guy out there, Tim Johnson, who has been way more than helpful with any SH issues I've ever had. Hydro-Therapy, my old boat, had all SH instruments and I had a bunch of issues with their AWI. Tim kept sending me different parts (usually the masthead transducer) until we got the instrument working correctly. Never a charge. Recently, with Captiva, I removed the PO's VHF with an older RAM (no Lat/Lon readings for the DSC) and installed my old original VHF radio and RAM mike off of Hydro-Therapy. When I ran a radio check the base station came through 5x5 but there was a loud hum emanating from the RAM when I transmitted on it. I spoke to Tim and he suggested it could be the cable between the base down below and the RAM plug at the pedestal (interference from the engine or something) OR the mike could have gone south on me. He said send it in and they'd take a look at it. Long story short, I called them two weeks after I shipped them the mike and Tim said it was a problem with the mike itself (one of the electronic components), they repaired it, and it had already been shipped back to me. When I asked how they could do that since I hadn't given them a credit card, he said to not worry about it. They "like to take care" of their customers! And this was an 8 yr old RAM mike!!!! It seemed so unusual for a vendor - especially a marine vendor!! - to have that level customer service that I wrote a laudatory email to Practical Sailor for their "Where Credit is Due" section. I haven't a clue whether it'll get published but I felt better for having written it. Raymarine? Now THERE I agree with you wholeheartedly !! Captiva came with all Raymarine instruments and I had bunches of issues and questions about upgrades, etc., and had numerous occasions to call for help. Once you get past the phone gatekeeper (they've always be nice and sympathetic) but their tech people always seem to have an attitude... like "why are you bothering me"!!
