Please reconsider.  

Designing and making your own gear is very satisfying, not only because you
create it yourself, but because you can repair and upgrade it yourself in
various versions until it works perfectly (like my fuel system), in many
cases much better than store-bought equipment (like my windlass switch).

After burning through three commercially made (and expensive) pendant
switches to operate my windlass (they all leaked water), I made one myself
of hardware and electrical store parts (for about $20) that has worked
flawlessly and more handily for years.

Doing this sort of thing also increases your confidence for handling future
projects.
