Some of the older Trace inverters (before the Xantrex land grab) , mostly
those intended for Solar systems, had the ability to 'assist' incoming AC
power. It was a great system. If we need 40A of power for a short time,
the inverter can assist the 30A dock power feed providing 10 additional
amps. Once the short term need passes, the inverter will switch back to
recharging the batteries. It is an Assist Mode as opposed to All or None
mode.

Great system, and I think there is another brand from Europe that does the
same thing.

However, not 'allowed' on our Boats per ABYC. .. Too bad, it would go to
solve many many issues if live aboards.

Ahmet,

I see the confusion. How can the inverter produce 120vac output from the
batteries yet also charge the batteries at the same time since both actions
use the inverter's transformers.

I will make a note to investigate this the next time I go to the boat and
get back to you.

The primary concept is that connecting 120vac dock power (or genset power)
to the output of an inverter will destroy all the FETs in the inverter. As
my manual says: "This damage is massive, obvious, and not covered by the
warranty."

Hi Norm,
The first paragraph does not make sense to me.
How can you add power to the AC input and charge the batteries from it at
the same time?
