Do you by chance have a cd in the primary drive when you go to boot the LiveCD in the secondary? I had a little problem before, where the LiveCD init found a cd in the primary, tried 3 times to match the volume ID, then gave up. Once I removed the cd from the primary drive it work. <shrug>
