I think getting close to ableton is not the worst issue. Imo the real problem 
is the lack of (linux native) synths. ZynAddSubFX is still not as extended as 
NI Massive. But far worse for me is that it is very difficult to interact 
between Zyn and LMMS:

* It is not possible to modulate anything in ZynAddSubFX (with few exceptions)
* For some reason, frequency tuning of notes (Shift+T in the Piano Roll) is not 
supported by LMMS for ZynAddSubFX, 

I have started a Qt port of ZynAddSubFX which would allow 
communication/modulation via RTOSC. However, I don't have much time for it. 
Currently, the LMMS side does only support external plugins via MIDI. If 
someone wants to help coding, you're welcome. The coding is not completely 
easy, since you should allow the modulation to be real time.
