Since we're speaking about GPU offloading, has there been any
consideration of using OpenCL for sound synthesis? LMMS could be a
frontrunner on that front.

There aren't many audio applications utilizing GPU rendering so far,
AFAIK. It could be a big thing setting LMMS apart from the competition.
