Live USB media or installing to disk?

Reason I ask is because the proprietary drivers are usually require a
reboot and therefor don't work well with live media.

If you are using wireless, it's probably trying to install the Ubuntu
equivalent of an NDISWrapper (Proprietary windows drivers) which are known
to have issues on Ubuntu.

If wired is an option you may choose to run a wired connection until you've
fixed the driver problem (usually requiring a connection to download the
tool or update which fixes it).

If wired is not an option you would need to perform your fix without a
connection, which can be difficult as the fixes usually require some
compilation tool that don't come pre-installed by default.

Last, you may find better luck with an older OS. (Sometimes 14.04 fails
where 12.04 works). Some just ditch Ubuntu all together and choose another
OS, which is an option too, but our build tutorial is written for Ubuntu,
so you'd likely be back playing the "dependency hell" game with another OS.

Welcome to Linux! :)
