@Tobiasz,
As usual, you are absolutely correct. I admire your enthusiasm last year I
considered starting a kick-starter for LMMS, but lack the time.
*What LMMS needs to march forward:*
- A dedicated QT development team
- Easily funded by a Kickstarter
- Dedicated graphics/branding point of contact
- Work with QT developers to finish theming support
- Easily funded by a Kickstarter
- Dedicated language/locale point of contact
- Work with QT developers to implement proper QM language support
*Obstacles:*
- From my understanding, despite the money we raise, the primary
developer, Tobias Doerffel does not have the time to dedicate to what we
are describing
- Tobias made it open source for a reason, so he is likely in favor of
such a campaign.
- A centralized leader or project manager is needed. This PM needs to
have experiencing managing medium to large development efforts, budgets,
resources and timelines.
- A backing non-profit will help. If a team is hired, there needs to be
a place for the money, and the payroll and taxes need to be managed
properly.
*Community:*
- It is my experience that the rich community will be born from
necessity.
- Currently, LMMS lacks the stability and efficiency in a DAW needed to
get a large community behind it.
- Once the software is stable and taken seriously by the music
community, the VST and Instrument vendors will start testing compatibility
and offer support to LMMS users.
*Where LMMS shines:*
- Price
- Instrument Plugins
- Cross-platform
- Piano Roll
*Where LMMS lacks:*
- Undo feature
- Lack of "Drum Rack"
- Inconsistency in UI (Right Click vs. Double Click vs. Ctrl Click vs.
Alt Click)
- UI space usage (toolbar is ~10% of screen, as opposed to Ableton's ~5%)
- Branding/Artwork/Theme
- Stability
- Popularity/Reputation w/ music community
- MIDI export
- MP3 import/MP3 export
*The Big Question:*
- Who has the experience and the time to project manage this overhaul?
Note: Project Managers can pay themselves for their work and still be
considered non-profit.
At this time in my life, I can personally offer to donate money and ideas,
but cannot dedicate a lot of time.
P.S. Tobiasz, I don't think I'm subscribed to the dev list, so you may
want to forward this along.
