@Dan: He's referring to a specific crash with the effects rack
 mentioned earlier. 

@Robert: Yeah I know it'll be tricky, I simply tacked on the 
 handles to the right of each strip, in each next layout position . 
Everything that referenced a strip 'index' was simply doubled 
 so that it referred to every 'second' layout item.

Originally I had incorporated the handles built right into class Strip,
 but it was not appropriate (a strip can exist elsewhere - Pianoroll,
 Arranger, and they will have their own splitter handles.)

So in the end I used the handles /only/ in the mixer, simply tacked them 
 onto the next mixer layout position.
But it means you have to treat a mixer strip and a handle as a single 'unit'.

Note I was also thinking of adding a small button in the right hand 
 of the strip label, to quickly switch back and forth between 
 open and closed, Ardour-style.
