Hi, As the author of Lumbermill, and a contributor to Chainsaw, I'd first like to say thanks for considering Oliver's fine project and mine. Lumbermill is only a month old, and I'm proud that it is far enough along to be mentioned. That said, I agree with the general sentiment expressed in another post. I don't think any of the Log4j GUI tools on the market have been through enough refactoring cycles to meet Apache's high standards. Moreover, while any developer (including myself) would be proud to have a project become a part of the Apache Software Foundation, I think it might be better for Log4j not to include a single GUI solution. Developers that use Log4j are usually fairly advanced software engineers (rookies typically have not yet learned the value of logging). As such, it seems likely that most Log4j users spend some significant amount of time refining their toolkit (mine, for example, includes TogetherJ, Emacs/JDE, Jikes, JDK, Lumbermill, CVS, and a wide swath of The Jakarta Project). To me, this implies that more Log4j users will benefit from a competitive offering of available GUI applications than from a single one that reflects the least unpleasant compromise. IMHO, advanced developers are better served by freedom of choice than by having a bundled suite that is easier to install. While it would be an honor to be invited to add Lumbermill to the Log4j project, I think the best interests of the users of Log4j is served by inspiring healthy competition between projects that complement Log4j, and including links to those projects on the Log4j download page (the current practice).
