I think this is a bad idea, especially if the document is something you will *need* to use log4j successfully. You may as well charge for log4j.
I can understand that "...writing good documentation is very time consuming...", but so is writing good software (log4j itself). There are many people that have contributed to log4j because it is open source. I feel that those people might be a bit upset by charging for the documentation for something they had helped to write.
