Yep folks. Zero Tolerance. This kind of posts is very annoying and in
very bad taste.

In the future ANYONE indulging in this kind of activity will:
 1. Be banned from all LPI lists
 2. If a registered LPI candidate have a "warning" note posted to their
LPI ID. 3. Ineligible for any discount or voucher offer
 4. Other punishments as necessary.

I have added a warning note on subscription to this list.

I'm as much against »this kind of activity« as anybody, but since this *is*
fairly dire and permanent-looking punishment, here are a few thoughts that
occurred to me just now:

  - Could you define on this list, for the benefit of long-term list
subscribers, exactly what »this kind of activity« includes?

  - Is there still going to be a warning for first-time offenders?

  - Will LPI, before actually meting out the punishments listed above,
try to ensure that the offending e-mail has not been forged by
someone else in order to create difficulties for the party in
question? (I would hate it if I had been studying hard for an LPI
exam at the annual big Linux event in my area, and three days before
the actual date some practical joker sends a Boxbe-type message in
my name to the LPI lists, so I get banned etc., and have to wait
at least another year for my crack at the discounted exam, or else
spend extra time and/or money to either travel or take computer-based
testing, for which I won't be able to get a discount voucher, either.)

  - Is there some sort of appeals or rehabilitation process? I think it
is not entirely impossible to accidentally engage in »this kind of
activity« (especially if »this kind of activity« is sort-of loosely
defined), and in particular if there is a zero tolerance, sudden
death, one-strike-and-you're-out policy in operation it would be good
if there was some way of clearing one's name and being reinstated into
the good graces of the LPI crowd. (I'm thinking »community service«
    here.)

Anselm:

Good points--as usual.

1.  Unacceptable activity: in this instance its the use of this mailing list--which is to discuss LPI program and activities, or on a wider note, Linux and Open Source Software, to use this list as a personal recruitment vehicle for social networking tools e.g. sending a blanket invitation to the entire community to a particular social network app (e.g. facebook, linkedin, etc.).  Its happened before and people didn't like it.  Its misuse of the lists' intentions--and I don't know of any mailing list that would permit this kind of activity.

2.  Warning: No warnings.  Upon list subscription there will be a warning.  This has happened a few times in the last few months and we've discussed it here--anyone on the list should know about it already.  Again, I can't imagine this kind of behaviour being tolerated on any mailing list.  Why should we tolerate it here.  Its disrespectful and, frankly, highly egotistical.

3.  Checking email: I did--in the candidate's record.  But, of course, an appeal can always be made if I'm wrong...and it is me who is enforcing this.  The affiliate always has an option of "leniency", of course.  However, if a forgery has happened--it must be pretty determined one.  You can only post to this list if you are subscribed--the forger would have to have control of the individuals email account and know that they are subscribed to this list.

4.  Appeals or rehabilitation process: Make me or this list an offer!  Anselm, I know you are being fair, but anyone who indulges in this kind of activity isn't really thinking about how "fair" they are being to everyone else -- most of whom they don't even know.

I'm open to alternative actions, policies and procedures--if someone can describe to me a better process.  But I think we need to draw a line in the sand somewhere and I think everyone will agree that this kind of behaviour is unacceptable.  Find me a better way and I'll implement it instead.  But for now: zero tolerance!
