Yep folks. Zero Tolerance. This kind of posts is very annoying and in
very bad taste.

In the future ANYONE indulging in this kind of activity will:
 1. Be banned from all LPI lists
 2. If a registered LPI candidate have a "warning" note posted to their
LPI ID. 3. Ineligible for any discount or voucher offer
 4. Other punishments as necessary.

I have added a warning note on subscription to this list.

I'm as much against »this kind of activity« as anybody, but since this *is*
fairly dire and permanent-looking punishment, here are a few thoughts that
occurred to me just now:

  - Could you define on this list, for the benefit of long-term list
subscribers, exactly what »this kind of activity« includes?

  - Is there still going to be a warning for first-time offenders?

  - Will LPI, before actually meting out the punishments listed above,
try to ensure that the offending e-mail has not been forged by
someone else in order to create difficulties for the party in
    question?

In many cases, the first language of many of the offenders is not
English. Many of these users participate in these LPI English language
mailing lists.

I'd hope there are some translations of LPI policies to appropriate
human languages, with appropriate changes based on cultural norms w/r/t
such activity.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike:

LPI hosts mailing lists from all over the world. I work with
affiliates from all over the world. I don't know of anywhere that
this "blanket social media invite" is tolerated on a technical list.
Its disrespectful. Show me a place where this is a cultural norm.

Dear Scott,

It is not my intent to be confrontational. But from what I've seen, most
such "offenses" are from users for which English is not the first
language. Perhaps the cultural norm against such practices is not as
severe in certain countries. I --suspect-- that's the case for countries
that host sites with content that may not comply with laws in other
countries, such as DMCA. (It would be inappropriate to name a specific
place.)

If you do already translate LPI mailing list policies to appropriate
non-English human languages, then you have your bases covered.

Thanks,
Mike
Mike:

I know all of the countries the recent offenders have come from.  We have mailing lists in all those countries.  I have never seen an instance of this kind of activity on any of those lists.  LPI-discuss has a large international subscription base.  Why would these individuals undertake this kind of activity on lpi-discuss and not on their own country or region specific list?  This is not about language or cultural differences--it is about basic rules of list behaviour anywhere--particularly amongst self-respecting professionals.

The list of this language is English.  As the list moderator in the interests of productivity and efficiency I'm not going to use LPI's limited resources to translate a "list moderator" rule of behaviour.  This thread warns existing list members and the "list welcome message" provides all new members with a warning for the future.  Otherwise we might as all sit back today while everyone on this list today submits their favourite social media app invite comfortable in the knowledge they will only be "warned" about their activity.
