Addendum:

 * Maybe add a section, weight 1, on phone/tablet operating systems?
   Android, UBports, some more?

Hi,

First, best wishes to everybody on this list. Let's make sure we continue to make the world more open.

Okay, here's my 2 cents, or flame bate, whatever you want to call it :-)

I would propose the following changes:

  * Change 'VS Code' to 'VS Code/Codium'. Better would of course be
    only Codium :-).
  * Change Gitea to Forgejo. Also because the governing structure with
Codeberg is better. Maybe add a topic on how to distinguish
between governing structures (company vs foundation).
  * Change MariaDB, MySQL to MariaDB, PostgreSQL
  * Restore the term 'info pages'?
  * Change 'processors (x86, ARM)' to 'processors (x86, ARM, Risc-V)'.
  * Change journalctl, dmesg to include syslog. Not every system in
the world is in the systemd ecosystem (yet).
  * Change 'Administrative Permissions' to 'Elevated Permissions' to
keep in line with Linux/Unix parlance. It's not Windows.
  * Change 'log into remote systems for accessing a Linux shell and
transferring files using SSH' to 'log into remote systems for
accessing a Linux shell using SSH and transferring files using
SCP', or remove the commands and make it: 'SECURELY log into
remote systems and securely transferring files'.
  * Change 'id, last, who, w' to 'id'. It is still LPI ESSENTIALS, not
    LPIC-1.
  * Add a small section on 'digital autonomy'?

LPI Essentials is introductory, easy, not for systadmins but for someone with a general interest in Linux and open source. In practice it is currently also for schools, as in my country most teachers are still pretty brain washed in the world of W. So, please keep it easy.

Regards,

Jeroen Baten

Hi there,

I hope you've all had a good start into the new year, despite the world getting more mad every day. We'll focus on the sane stuff and start working on an update for Linux Essentials in 2026. I've created a draft for the new objectives, which I'd like to share with you today.

The current version of the draft is available in the LPI wiki:

https://wiki.lpi.org/wiki/Linux_Essentials_Objectives_V2.0

There is also diff between the current version 1.6 and the initial draft for version 2.0:

https://wiki.lpi.org/w/index.php?title=Linux_Essentials_Objectives_V2.0&diff=5878&oldid=5877 <https://wiki.lpi.org/w/index.php?title=Linux_Essentials_Objectives_V2.0&diff=5878&oldid=5877>

A lot of the changes are improvements in the descriptions and objective/topic names. The overall outline and weights hasn't changed, but some objectives were restructured and received updates, i.e. regarding Linux distributions and using Linux in the cloud. I've also added SSH and systemctl and journalctl, while syslog and net-utils are gone now.

I'd appreciate you taking a look at the proposed changes, i.e. if you're teaching Linux Essentials, but, of course, everyone is invited to review the draft. If you have any additional suggestions or comments, please feel follow up on the list or privately.

Looking forward to your thoughts,

Fabian
