This is exactly what we would hope to hear from this forum. In fact, if there is significant demand for a Level 3 exam -- especially one that didn't required Level 2 as a re-requisite, and if people here are willing to help see it through -- we could certainly run with it.

LPI, after all, was born from the Linux community and we still have our roots here. We are driven by what the community wants.

And we're listening. I appreciate the input from everyone who participates here. For those of you who want to step forward to help go from discussion to development, let me know.

Some ideas:

* Security - there is already a list for this (a mostly inactive list)
* Kernel internals - I'm a big fan of this one
* Software Design - making software that configures, compiles, installs
like standard software. Perhaps using open source widget libraries.

I have been approached on a few occasions regarding a developers' certification (especially for Perl) but I'm cautious about this. It's possible to test for knowledge of tools and interfaces, I guess. But much of programming is creative, and you can't test that with an exam.

I wonder how many companies would hire a programmer with the help of certification -- it's not like system administration in this way.

* Hardware/software interfacing & Device drivers - This is probably
beyond LPI's scope, but might include basic hardware design (USB,
serial, PCI) and how to get information from such a device

The parts of this that are *not* beyond LPI's scope are the tools and interfaces admins would use to control these devices within a Linux installation. Does the LPIC program need more of this?

Again, thanks for all the input.
