Sorry, I should have clarified (and it was the context under
discussion) that my experience has been for leading-edge development.
 But I also stated that I like Portage as a source build management
system for other things that are leading edge adoption.

E.g., if you're using Gentoo for web servers, then web tends to be a
very leading-edge development.  That's why I stated I wish I could
have Portage for building a web application stack on even a
traditional distro.

And there are other applications as ewll.
