I just installed LPRng and ifhp from The FreeBSD ports collection for
many reasons I wont go into here. I am having a hard time getting it
work with my printers and am getting a little frusttrated.

Here is what I have for printers available to me on my networks:

1. Texas Instruments microLaser (Postscript only) connected to the
network via a JetDirect EX plus

2. Epson Stylus 500 connected to the network via an Win95 machine and a
FreeBSD server running samba to handle the printing.

3. An HP4 with a HP Jetdirect card installed.

Here is my /etc/printcap before I switched to LPRng:

#
#TI microLaser (home)
ti:rm=hpjet:rp=raw:mx=0:sh:sd=/var/spool/lpd/ti: \
ti2:if=/usr/local/libexec/psif:rm=hpjet:rp=raw:mx=0:sh:sd=/var/spool/lpd/ti2:
tiM:if=/usr/local/libexec/psifm:rm=hpjet:rp=raw:mx=0:sh:sd=/var/spool/lpd/tiM:

# Epson Stylus Color 500 on Win95 (home)
ep|samba line printer Epson:lp=:rm=the:rp=ep:sh:mx#0:sd=/var/spool/lpd/ep:

# HP4 Printer (office)
hp4|lj1_text|text1:lp=:rm=mps:rp=text:sd=/var/spool/lpd/hp4:
hp4pcl|lj1_raw|raw1:lp=:rm=mps:rp=raw:sd=/var/spool/lpd/hp4pcl:

here is the contents of the /usr/local/libexec/psif file:

#!/bin/sh
#
# psif - Print PostScript or plain text on a PostScript printer
# Script version; NOT the version that comes with lprps
#  Installed in /usr/local/libexec/psif
#
read first_line
first_two_chars=`expr "$first_line" : '\(..\)'`

if [ "$first_two_chars" = "%!" ]; then
   #
   #  PostScript job, print it.
   #
    echo "$first_line" && cat && printf "\004" && exit 0
    exit 2
else
    #
    # Plain text, convert it, then print it.
    #
    ( echo "$first_line"; cat ) | /usr/local/bin/a2ps -nL -nH -p -ns -1 && printf
"\004" && exit 0
     exit 2
fi

Would like some assistance in getting converted over to LPRng

TIA
