I've always had problems with small "I/O TIMEOUT" settings on the printers
control panels. (Especially with colour printers doing a warmup or
calibration)

I've increase the "I/O TIMEOUT" at the printers control panel to it's
maximum and have not had any more problems.

If you not using pagecounting then you can turn status messaging off
(@status). This also seems to fix it.

However if you need pagecounting (for accounting purposes) then @status is
not an option. I bet if you (as a test) reduce the "I/O TIMEOUT" to 1 or
zero seconds you will experience problems 100% of the time. And if you
check your status.printername file you will see the printer disconnects
before returning a pagecount at the start of the job.

Here is an example of my printcap...

myprinter:
  :sd=/var/spool/lpd/%P
  :filter=/usr/local/libexec/filters/ifhp
  :send_job_rw_timeout=0
  :connect_timeout=0
  :send_query_rw_timeout=0
  :send_failure_action=retry
  :lp=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx%9100
  :ifhp=model=hp4000,waitend_interval=0,sync_interval=0

Hope this helps.
