It kind of depends on what you're doing with the printouts, too. We got
samples from a number of printers on transparencies and paper when trying to
decide what kind of color printers to go with here...it was decided since we
do more slides than paper prints to go with the Phaser 350 (replaced with a
Phaser 850) printer. The "laser-class" wax will scratch off, but it gives
more vibrant color on projected transparencies.
The Phaser 350 and 850 printers have been good to us. You need to turn off
Job Pipelining (in the printer's web interface) to get accurate page counts
via the appsocket interface.
The CLJ45X0 should give you accurate page counts, too. We've found this
printer to have some quirky behavior at times, though. In particular, if you
run the thing out of paper, jam paper in it, or when waiting for the printer
to warm up. LPRng/ifhp will spool the job to the printer, which it will
happily take into memory. If the job doesn't print soon enough, LPRng/ifhp
will assume the printer went comatose and try again. Status queries will NOT
tell LPRng the printer is busy like the B&W HP printers.
As a result, you need to
a. Deal with getting multiple copies of any given document if the
printer needs to warm up, paper jams, or paper runs out and you
don't fill it RIGHT AWAY. >OR<
b. Crank up the job timeout in LPRng and deal with the fact you will
rarely see any such status reports from the ifhp filter.
I haven't had a chance to deal with any of the other Xerox color printer
lineup.
