Well, I managed to resolve the make problems (my very talented sysadmin
here found and corrected the make problem and it builds just fine).

But after tinkering for a solid 2 days, I'm afraid I am slightly brain
damaged and am hoping for some insights or even a slap "Thanks I needed
that"!

While printing from the host on which I am testing LPRng works just great,
my goal is to facilitate a queue (that can hold all jobs eventually) for
both Win and Mac clients.

I'm testing the Mac clients at the moment.

If I use the Printer utility and setup for the printer using LPR on the
Mac clients, I spec a hostname and queue name (which, if I am getting this
right, is one of those specified in /usr/local/etc/printcap). In this
test case, its simply lp.

When I print anything, though, from Word on the Mac client, it goes into
la-la land, El Big Black Hole.

Setting up a debug level of 3 on the host (/usr/local/sbin/lpd -F -D3 > &
/tmp/lp2 &) and then reading the resulting /tmp/fp2 yields a veritable
jungle of stuff, among which is this:

2002-01-04-15:10:29.911 gecko [1305] RECV lp: setstatus: msg
'lp: Check_for_missing files: missing data file 'dfA220ip103
 038.uvm.edu''

(all one line).

And, in fact, if I run lpq -Pall I get:

Status: lp: Check_for_missing files: missing data file
'dfA220ip103038.uvm.edu' at 15:10:29.912

So I suspect there is a relationship here.

Thinking this might be the FAQ Q# 20.4, I added this to one of the
printers in printcap:

        :send_data_first:

No difference.

The brain damage part: I presume I do not have to have a locally setup
account on the _host_ (where LPRng is) to have a non host print request
serviced - but I may be missing the boat completely here!

And, I am not running netatalk on this test box - no papd or
papd.conf. And my assumption is, again, that I don't need to have
this. The point, I think, of LPR based printing options on the Macintosh
(true since LW 8.6) is so that one does not *need* the full evils of
Appletalk.

Should I call it a day and go home? Or can somebody set me straight???
