On a system with the following printcap entry for lp23, the clent
programs will talk to the server at localhost using the remote
printer name lp instead of the local name lp23. It then returns with
an error message saying that lp doesn't exist in the local server,
which indeed it doesn't, but it exists on the remote system ppsclp23.
I don't know if there is a deeper reason for this, or it was some
mistake. I also tried to do the same on LPRng version 3.7.4 where
this problem does not occur.
lp23:\
:rm=ppsclp23:rp=lp:\
:sd=/var/spool/LPRng/lp23:\
:mx#0:sh:lf=/var/tmp/lp23:
For example lpq returns this message:
$ lpq -P lp23
Printer: lp23 is lp@localhost
Printer: lp@ibbi - ERROR: spool queue for 'lp' does not exist on server ibbi
non-existent printer or you need to run 'checkpc -f'
and lpr returns this message:
$ ls | lpr -P lp23
Status Information:
sending job 'vek@ibbi+960' to lp@localhost
connecting to 'localhost', attempt 1
connected to 'localhost'
requesting printer lp@localhost
job 'vek@ibbi+960' transfer to lp@localhost failed
error 'link error 253' with ack 'ACK_FAIL'
sending str '^Blp' to lp@localhost
error msg: 'spool queue for 'lp' does not exist on server ibbi'
error msg: ' non-existent printer or you need to run 'checkpc -f''
