It has been a while, but I struggled with this too. Eventually, I
confirmed that it was the _version_ of LPRNG I was using. I think (but am
not sure) that I was testing 3.8.1, and the minute I dropped back to
3.7.9, all the Mac stuff began to work. I did use the Mac lpr client and
found that to be quite solid, actually :)
Good luck. And as others have echoed, if possible, I would stringly
advocate moving to OS X as quickly as you can! Better than aspirin for
pain relief!
