First of all check if you have an up to date 'syslogd' installed, there was a 
memory leak problem with it some time ago.

Secondly you can add more swap space dynamicly by using swapon command.
Create a file on a partition with plenty of space and then:
swapon /path_to_your_swap_file
use man swapon for more details.

Thirdly - the ultimate solution - add more RAM, I have never seen such a 
perfomance boost with any other operating system after upgrading RAM.
